My friend recently watched the whole of The Wire for the first time. If you haven’t seen it yet then you lose. It is, without a doubt, the best thing I’ve ever seen on TV. At it’s very core, it’s a show about cops trying to get the bad guys. That isn’t really an adequate description though, no TV show has ever held a mirror up to urban life like it. Over five seasons it examines the workings and failings of the modern American city, it’s a show with something to say about the world we live in. My friend’s left with a void in his life now, everything else on TV just doesn’t compare. The Wire hangover is brutal.
I told him one way to get his Wire fix was by watching the BBC show Luther, which starred Idris Elba, aka Stringer Bell. He’s pretty much the coolest man in the world. Luther is nowhere near as good as The Wire – nothing is – but it’s compelling TV. The theme song is “Paradise Circus” by Massive Attack from their latest album, Heligoland. The show features some really good music, always ending with a song that perfectly fits with what’s just happened. Go watch it – after you’ve seen The Wire.
